Background

Natalie joined the Novel Beings project team in January 2021 to assist with administrative and communications-related tasks. Natalie started as a sociology PhD student at Newcastle University in January 2020, working alongside Dr Simon Woods and Dr Kenneth Taylor. Her research project ‘Governing synthetic biology: a food policy approach’ considers what might be on the horizon for synthetic biology and the potential implications of emerging developments for UK food policy. Through in-depth online interviews with synthetic biologists, policymakers, those involved in relevant areas of the food industry and others, Natalie’s project investigates the social and ethical implications of biotechnological developments while identifying opportunities for public engagement.
Natalie holds a BA in French, Russian and Spanish from the University of Birmingham. She went on to study Food Policy at City, University of London, graduating with an MSc in 2018. During her Master’s degree, Natalie researched participatory social policy and public engagement in the context of food poverty. Natalie also has a year’s experience working as a buyer in the food industry.
